How to start the day

How to start the day with a win...

How did you start today?

Do you think you’ve improved your life? Have you lived your life or has life lived you? Thing is, you’ve just missed a chance to take control, improve and extend your life. Know this, at this stage of our lives, if we’re not moving forwards, we’re sliding backwards. Nature figures we’ve served our purpose, produced offspring, protected and provided for them until they could look after themselves and begin the same cycle all over again. We’ve done our bit for humanity, so we now slowly decay and return back to earth. That’s the programme.

Unless…

You still need your mind and body because you’re still using it.

The body is a fantastic machine and we’re just scratching the surface of what it can do. So where do we start? Well you’ve started by reading this blog which means you want to have the best retirement possible and are looking for ideas of how to do that. So let’s go

Start as you mean to go on. Getting up; bathroom, teeth, shower, let the dog out, coffee/tea, toast, cereals, breakfast TV…? You just died a bit, sorry but you did.

Get up, move your body, stretch, bend, squat, jump, dance whatever, as long as your body moves (I can show you my routine if you’re not a regular exerciser or are working around a mobility issue). You’re oiling the joints, making the muscles stronger and moving better already.

Drink water. It’s been 8 hours since you drank, you’re dehydrated. If you’re dehydrated you’re weak. If you’re weak you’re not the best you. Drink a glass of water.

Done that? Time for breakfast now? What’s the rush? The longer you go without eating, the better, you’re fasting! As in break…..fast…!

“I’ll keel over if I don’t have my breakfast on time” If the doctor says so then go for it, I’m not a doctor. Don’t keel over. Please. The rest of you, having breakfast an hour later could be good for you. Your body and digestive system will appreciate the rest.

Don’t turn the TV on just yet, have a think about what you’ve got to be thankful for; Examples, you’re here, I’m sure you know people who aren’t, children, grandchildren, friends.. All a bit “woo woo”? Maybe, but science is now showing that being grateful for what you have can have a positive effect on your health. Simply put, thinking about good stuff makes you feel better than thinking about bad stuff. Agreed?

Time for breakfast. Tea/Coffee and a slice of toast, bowl of cereal by any chance?

Remember growing up when we had runny eggs and soldiers to dip in them? Well that was a better breakfast than the healthiest of healthy cereals (how did our parents and grand parents know this?).

Do we all know what proteins, carbohydrates and fats are? Yes but no I think. We’ll go into it as we go along but for now know this; At our age our bodies need PROTEIN. In fact we need it more than the young men and women at the gym. They want to build muscle, we want to keep muscle. We lose muscle, we lose strength, we lose strength we can’t move as much, we can’t move we become frail, when we do move we move slowly…and so on. Look up protein breakfast choices. I’m not saying lose the toast and weetabix, just saying get some protein in there too.

If you take anything I’ve said and do it tomorrow you will be a better person than you are today even if it’s one millionth of a percent.

Because you moved forwards, therefore you lived and didn’t die.

Me, I’m not having breakfast till after 2pm, I’m going outside for a short walk, then to the gym, then for a ride on my motorbike. Enjoy your day
